Beneath the Blue Is Black is a coming-of-age novel set in the dangerous world of Maui’s black coral divers, where seven-year-old Tag Hewitt is taken to the island by his father after his mother leaves them, forcing him to live with a hardened grandfather shaped by a lifetime at sea.
